The university has established eligibility criteria to ensure compliance with all statutory requirements.

Bridgetown International University School of Medicine's medical degree program in Barbados is open to prospective students from all around the world. The Bridgetown International University School of Medicine takes students on a rotating basis; semesters begin in January, May, and September. Admissions committees take into account a comprehensive evaluation of students based on their academic standing, maturity, intelligence, and motivation.

There is no place for discrimination in terms of gender, religion, age, national origin, race, color, or disability. The university has as its policy and practice adhering to the relevant and workable disability legislation in Barbados.

5.5-Year MD Program

Eligibility Criteria for the Pre-Medical Phase

Students lacking the necessary prerequisites and college credits will be granted admission to the Pre-Medical phase of our 5.5-Year MD program which spans a duration of four semesters.

The following are the eligibility criteria:

  • Students must have completed their higher secondary School/Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent by submitting official transcripts and certificates with overall average minimum GPA of 2.5 or Grade "C" in Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
  • At least 16 years of age by December 31st in the year of admission at BIUSM. If students are below 18 years old, the student must submit an affidavit which is notarized.
  • A Personal Statement that demonstrates the student's motivations behind pursuing a career in medicine as well as highlighting the student's educational and professional goals.
  • Students from non-English speaking countries whose medium of instruction is not English may be required to submit documentation demonstrating their proficiency in English, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or an equivalent English course.
  • TOEFL of 60 or IELTS of 6.0 (if applicable) taken within two years of application.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

4-Year MD Program

Eligibility Criteria — The 4-Year MD Program

Students who have earned a bachelor's degree or its equivalent will be granted admission to the Basic Sciences phase of our 4-Year MD program which consists of six semesters of Basic Sciences courses and seventy-six weeks of Clinical Sciences Clerkship experiences.

The following are the eligibility criteria:

  • Must have completed the BIUSM Pre-Medical Program/equivalent or earned a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences or Life Sciences or equivalent course from recognized institutions with an overall average minimum GPA of 2.5 or Grade "C".
  • Students must show proof of Secondary School Completion or its equivalent by submitting official transcripts and certificates with overall average minimum GPA of 2.5 or Grade "C" in Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
  • Students from non-English speaking countries whose medium of instruction is not English may be required to submit documentation demonstrating their proficiency in English, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or an equivalent English course.
  • TOEFL of 60 or IELTS of 6.0 (if applicable) taken within two years of application.

Transfer Applicants

Eligibility Criteria — For Transfer Students

Students previously enrolled in a WHO recognized, IMED-listed medical school may apply for admission with advanced standing, provided they meet all the requirements for admission to the School of Medicine.

In addition, transfer students must meet the following requirements:

  • Official transcript(s) sent directly from the previous medical school(s) to the Admissions Office.
  • No student will be granted direct admission to the Clinical Sciences phase of the program.
  • Minimum of 30 transferable credit hours or 45 hours of coursework.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • A Personal Statement that demonstrates the student's motivations behind pursuing a career in medicine as well as highlighting the student's educational and professional goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation from the previous institution.
